Pattaya Nightlife Terminology Explained
A beginner-friendly guide to common nightlife terms in Pattaya. Learn what mamasan, ladydrink, short time, and more mean before your night out.
New to Pattaya nightlife? This guide explains the most common terms and lingo you’ll hear in bars and clubs.
Quick Tips
- Lady drink costs ฿150–฿200 (LK Metro / beer bars) or ฿200–฿250 (Walking Street agogos) — always confirm the price before ordering; one lady drink does not commit you to anything else
- Bar fine is paid to the bar, not the girl — LK Metro ฿600–฿1,200 (ST), Walking Street ฿800–฿1,500 (ST); the girl’s own fee is negotiated separately
- Joiner fee (฿200–฿500) is charged by some hotels for bringing a visitor to your room — ask at check-in so there are no surprises
- Number = the girl’s identifier in the bar; tell the mamasan her number when you want to arrange a bar fine
- Freelancer = girl working independently with no bar fine; common on Beach Road from ~9pm
- Checkbin = “bill please” — works anywhere in Thailand, not just bars

Common Pattaya Nightlife Terms
Mamasan
A female manager or supervisor in a bar, responsible for staff, customer service, and keeping things running smoothly.
Ladydrink
A drink you buy for a hostess or dancer. The bar takes a cut and she receives a commission. It is a direct way to show interest without committing to anything further.
Current 2026 prices:
- Beer bars and LK Metro agogos: ฿150–฿200
- Walking Street agogos: ฿200–฿250
Always confirm the price before ordering — some bars charge more. One lady drink does not obligate you to pay a bar fine.
Short Time
A brief arrangement with a bar girl, typically lasting 1–2 hours. The cost has two parts: the bar fine (paid to the bar) and the girl’s own fee (negotiated directly with her). Typical girl’s short-time fee: ฿1,000–฿2,500 depending on the bar and girl.
Long Time
An arrangement for the whole night, usually until morning. Again, there are two costs: bar fine (LT rates: ฿1,000–฿2,000 depending on venue) and the girl’s own overnight fee, typically ฿2,000–฿5,000+. Always agree both upfront.
Barfine
A fee paid directly to the bar when you want a staff member to leave with you for the evening. It compensates the bar for losing a working girl. The bar fine and the girl’s own fee are two separate costs.
Current 2026 bar-fine rates:
- LK Metro agogos: ฿600–฿1,200 (short time), ฿1,000–฿1,800 (long time)
- Walking Street agogos: ฿800–฿1,500 (short time), ฿1,200–฿2,000 (long time)
- Soi 6: no bar fine — you pay a room fee of ฿500–฿1,000 directly to the bar for use of the upstairs room
Always confirm both the bar-fine amount and whether it covers short time or long time before agreeing.
Checkbin
The Thai-English phrase for “bill please” or “check please.” Used to ask for your bill in bars and restaurants.
Go-go Bar
A bar with stage shows, dancing, and entertainment. Common in Pattaya’s nightlife areas.
Soi
The Thai word for “side street” or “alley.” Many nightlife hotspots are on sois (e.g., Soi 6, Soi Buakhao).
More Pattaya Nightlife Terms
Coyote Girl
A hostess who works in a club or bar primarily to dance and socialise with customers. They don't perform on stage like go-go dancers, but will sit with you for a drink.
Jok
Thai rice porridge, a popular late-night snack after a big night out. Available at stalls near nightlife areas.
Happy Ending
Slang for additional services at massage parlours. Not all massage shops offer this — reputable ones are clearly labelled as traditional massage.
Boom Boom
Common slang for sexual services. Often asked about or offered near entertainment areas.
PG / Non-PG
Some bars and areas market themselves as PG (no sexual services, just drinks and socialising). Walking Street and agogos are generally non-PG.
Agogo
A type of bar featuring female dancers on a stage or pole. Drinks are ordered, and customers can buy a ladydrink for dancers they like.
Number
When a hostess gives you a number, it means she's available to be bar-fined. You tell the mamasan the number, pay the barfine, and she can leave with you.
Over Rider
An additional fee sometimes charged by a short-time hotel on top of the room charge when bringing in a bar girl. Always ask about the room rate and any additional fees before committing.
Joiner Fee
A charge levied by some hotels when you bring a non-resident visitor to your room. Paid to the hotel, not the girl — completely separate from the bar fine or any other arrangement. Typical rate: ฿200–฿500. Budget guesthouses near Walking Street and Soi Buakhao rarely charge it; higher-end hotels are more likely to. Always ask at check-in: “Do you have a guest policy or joiner fee?”
Freelancer
A girl working independently, not attached to a bar. Because there is no bar fine, the overall cost is often lower than a bar girl. Freelancers are common along Beach Road from around 9pm, on Walking Street, and on dating apps such as ThaiFriendly. Typical short-time fee: ฿1,000–฿2,500 — negotiated directly. Always agree all terms clearly before going anywhere.
Farang
The Thai word for a Westerner or foreigner (primarily of European descent). Not a pejorative — simply descriptive and widely used in everyday conversation. You will hear it constantly. Prices at some tourist-facing venues may be quoted higher for farang than for Thai nationals; this is common at markets and tourist-area restaurants.
Teerak (Tee-rak)
Thai term of endearment meaning darling or sweetheart. Bar girls use it frequently with customers as a social convention. Warm-sounding but largely situational in the commercial context — not to be confused with genuine romantic interest.
Katoey / Ladyboy
Transgender women, widely known as ladyboys in Pattaya. A significant and visible presence in Pattaya nightlife — working in agogos, beer bars, and on Beach Road alongside Thai women. Generally well-integrated and accepted in Thai culture. Katoey are often identifiable by features but not always. If unsure, it's perfectly acceptable to ask directly — Pattaya's katoey community is generally open about their identity.
Thai Massage vs Special Massage
Traditional Thai massage (nuad phaen boran) involves stretching, pressure points, and full-body manipulation performed fully clothed. Widely available throughout Pattaya from ฿200–฿400/hour from reputable shops. Excellent for recovery after a night out.
"Special massage" is a euphemism for sexual services, typically offered from shops with neon-lit windows or near entertainment areas. A completely separate category from traditional massage — prices and services negotiated directly. Exercise your own judgement and be clear on what you are paying for before agreeing.

- The bar fine and the girl’s fee are two separate costs — agree both explicitly before leaving the bar
- Ask your hotel about their guest policy at check-in — joiner fees (฿200–฿500) apply at many hotels; budget guesthouses near Walking Street rarely charge
- Learn the number system — girls in agogos wear numbered badges or tags; tell the mamasan the number, not the name
- Checkbin works everywhere — use it in any bar or restaurant; Thai staff understand it immediately
